What are the characteristics of LED and why LED but not other light source such as neon light or incandescent bulb?
Question 2: What are the characteristics of LED and why LED but not other light source such as neon light or incandescent bulb?
Answer:
• Creative
LEDs can be very small size (smaller than 2mm) and are easily built in the form of any irregular shape with almost every type of material to create new lighting applications. It can also be used as a new kind of building material in conjunction with other building materials such as wood, and glass.
• Long lifetime
LEDs have an extremely long operational life. LEDs can be worked several tens of thousands of hours when proper thermal design is considered in the fixture design. Money and energy saved in maintenance and replacement costs due to the long lifetime.
• Efficient/Economic
In conventional incandescent bulbs, a lot of heat is generated from a filament when the light-production processed. This is completely wasted energy, because a huge portion of the electricity isn't going toward producing visible light. On the contrary, LEDs generate very little heat. A much higher percentage of the electricity is converting to light directly. Technically, LEDs produce more lumen per watt than incandescent bulbs.
Fluorescent bulbs use only 20 percent of the energy that an incandescent bulb uses, and LED lights use even less, only 1/10th the energy of incandescent bulbs, even while producing the same amount of light. While LEDs may be more expensive than incandescent and fluorescent lights up front, but their lower cost in the long run make them a better buy.
• Durable
LEDs are solid state lighting devices that applying semiconductor material instead of a filament or neon gas. LEDs don't have a filament, so they last much longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs or fluorescent tubes. LEDs do not use fragile materials such as glass and filament which means LEDs are much more resistant to shock and impact and will not shatter when dropped.
• Environmental
LEDs is an energy efficient product that reduce carbon emissions and fuel costs. Because they contain no sulfurs or phosphors, they are also an eco-friendly product for disposal. In addition, they are also lead-free, UV-free, and mercury-free, and are RoHS compliant.
• Safety
LED lights are cool to the touch. In contrast to most light sources, LEDs radiate very little heat and no ultra-violet (UV) radiation. In electroluminescence, some energy is dispersed as heat through the base of the LED. As all of us know incandescent light bulbs get real hot (over 100oC) to the touch. LED lighting reduces the potential for safety risks of burns and fires.
Also, LED lighting devices are made from non toxic materials, unlike fluorescent lighting that uses mercury that may pose a danger to the environment.
